Is it safe to drive during a tropical storm?
Hanna is going to hit near me on Saturday afternoon. While I’m pretty far inland, the forecasters have a tropical storm wind warning in my area, along with a flood warning.
I work tomorrow and get off in the late afternoon. I drive a Chevy Cobalt. Am I being stupid by going to work? Everyone else is planning on coming in, but my family is upset that I’m going.
The mere fact that there is a tropical storm is not a danger. There are two main dangers to automobile travel in the weather conditions that you describe:
1) Things in the road (storm debris, fallen trees, etc.)
2) Floodwaters. Even a few inches is enough for a car to float (weird, considering the weight of a car, but tires are very buoyant).
Drive very slowly. If you see water, branches, or anything else in the way, turn around. Do not attempt to drive through or across water.

Just be careful if the weather does get bad. Maybe you could leave work early if it looks like it’s going to be bad.

Drive with caution & you should be ok.
Allways drive with caution when travleing in sever weather conditons,As long as you have goood tires & good wind shield wipers you should be fine. Make shure that you have a full tank of gas before you go out.
Drive only if it is nessary to do so.

i have a feeling Hanna may be over by now but for future reference it is not unsafe to drive in a tropical storm but you need to be more aware and take great care. it would probably be unwise if it is what we in oz call a cyclone and it was hitting your area directly. i would be inclined to check with what we call the Emergency services, the police or similar authority to check and be guided by their recommendations. i hope you went to work. i can understand your parents concern but there does come a time when you have to make decisions for yourself bearing in mind that you have checked everything out and i think you can.

Well it’s your option no one can stop u, Just be careful. To be honest if u were to call off & they wouldn’t understand or fire you then they ain’t worth working for I’d say stay home but I’ll leave it at that. Be careful.
