Tying with Hans- Tungsten Squirrel Hair Leech

April 17, 2010 - 6:12 pm No Comments

On the small streams I frequent, it is hard to fish streamers. It doesn’t seem like an obviously fly choice. However, once you start using them and catching fish they become a staple in your box. Rabbit Hair leeches and squirrel hair leeches work great. On smaller water I find myself fishing them more and more. I cast across, let them sink, swing, and then “jig” them back upstream. Tie some and you will be happy they did.

Happy Tying

Betty’s Tropical Joy Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Recipe

April 8, 2010 - 4:42 pm 25 Comments

In this video, Betty responds to a viewer request by demonstrating how to make her Tropical Joy Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. For an easy cake that uses a mix, the flavor of this particular cake is unbelievable!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
20 oz. can of pineapple slices, drained (Reserve juice for later use.)
maraschino cherry halves
18.5 oz. package yellow cake mix (I used a butter-flavored cake mix; you may use white, etc.)
2 eggs, well-beaten

Pour 1/2 cup melted butter or margarine into a 13-inch by 9-inch by 2-inch Pyrex (or other) baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup brown sugar eenly over the melted butter or margarine. Drain the pineapple slices, reserving juice. Arrange pineapple slices and maraschino cherry halves on top of brown sugar mixture. Add enough water to the reserved pineapple juice to make 1 1/3 cups of liquid. Combine 2 well-beaten eggs, 1 1/3 cups pineapple liquid, and yellow cake mix. Beat for 2 minutes with an electric mixer. Pour batter over the top of the fruit. Spread the batter evenly. Bake at 350 for approximately 50 minutes, or until done. (I loosely cover the cake with a sheet of aluminum foil for the first 15 or 20 minutes of baking, so that it will not overbrown. Don’t leave it too long, or the cake will rise and stick to it! Also, you can test for doneness of the cake by placing a toothpick in the center, and it should come out clean.) When the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes, or a little longer. While the cake is still warm, invert it onto a large serving tray or platter. Yummy!!!

Fly Tying-Tungsten Epoxy Scud

February 22, 2010 - 1:32 pm 7 Comments

Fishing notes: This fly is a tank! Very heavy. Kim fishes the spring creeks more than anyone else I know and he seems to have them dialed. He uses this fly as his point and many times can avoid using split shot all together. This is the perfect fly for a shallow riffle into a deep pool. It gets down to the fishes level ASAP. A must for the upcoming trout season. Sign up at www.tightlinesflyshop.com to get the free fly of the month.

Fowler saves Fury

The Wellington Phoenix was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the North Queensland Fury at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.

Wellington took the lead in the 5th minute courtesy of a Tim Brown header before North Queensland levelled the scores in the six minutes from time minute with a Robbie Fowler header into the back of the net.

The Phoenix and the Fury had their chances in the first half but it was the visitors who managed to capitalise before both sides found their attacking flair in the second period.

The draw marks a record sixth consecutive draw for the visitors and a fifth consecutive draw for the home side, which is still looking for a win at home.

Wellington coach Ricki Herbert said there were some positives in another draw.

“I think we created a bit of a record tonight, it is not one that you want to have but the Fury was really hard to beat,” he said.

“You can say we are the hardest teams to beat in the league this year but we would like three points.”

North Queensland coach Ian Ferguson said he was glad to walk away with a draw after conceding the early goal.

“After the start of the game we had, being one down again early, it is the same old cliches (but) the boys have been fantastic,” he said.

“It was a game of two halves again, Wellington was the better team in the first half and we were the better team in the second.”

“We couldn’t slot it in but it would be more worrying for me if we were not making chances.”

North Queensland had a golden chance in the first minute when a pin-point through-ball allowed James Robinson to gallop past the defensive line to be one-on-one with the goalkeeper but he pulled his shot wide.

Wellington responded in the fifth minute with Paul Ifill rampaging down the right wing before delivering an inch-perfect cross for a Tim Brown header into the net.

The two sides had their opportunites for the remainder of the half with numerous crosses and breakaways but could not capitalise.

The Fury pushed forward after the break with Jeremy Brockie charging down the right wing before driving a cross into the path of a sliding Daniel McBreen but he failed to take control and the ball bounced off his knees and over the touch line.

Dyron Daal came off the bench after one hour and showed a set of clean heals to stride past defenders and swing in a cross to a sliding Robbie Fowler, but he also could not slot it past the goalkeeper.

McBreen then dashed passed a huddle of defenders to receive a controversial free kick but skied the ball over the charging goalkeeper which sparked a small scuffle as the ball should have been played back to the opposition who was in possession before time was stopped for an injury.

The Phoenix had its opportunites, none better then when opposition goalkeeper Paul Henderson came out of his box and to the right to make a clearance but it went straight to an attacker.

Daniel was left on the turf after a strong challenge and had to be stretched off which gave both sides a welcome drink break from a warm night.

Chris Tadrosse afterwards sprinted down the left win and hammered a cross to an unmarked Fowler who showed his class to head it into the net in the 84th minute.

Ingrid Michaelson – “When the Leaves” (Lyrics)

October 9, 2009 - 3:06 pm 14 Comments

Okay so I’ve had this song since it came out and I always wanted to make a lyric video, but there was something odd about the file and I’ve JUST NOW figured out how to make it work…. And unfortunately it is FAR TOO LATE to be putting up this song with its lyrics and accompanying images because it’s a Christmas song and right now is May, but it’s such a sweet song, and I am in love with all of Ingrid’s songs no matter the season, so I decided to just upload anyway. :)
Here’s the actual video description:
Lyrics to Ingrid Michaelson’s single “When the Leaves” (2008), I think it accompanied “Snowfall” (which I uploaded in the right season…).
Anyway, no copyright infringement intended! Just doing this to spread the love of Ingrid’s music :) And no copyright infringment intended of all the beautiful images, once again from Digital Blasphemy (see my other lyric vids…)
So yeah ok I should stop blabbering. Enjoy!
