    @ Hanedagamer:

The BSD license does not protect anything. It allows for unscrupulous individuals to take source code, modify it and close it up – Apple’s Macintosh OS/X comes to mind, which is the most painful failure FreeBSD has ever had to endure (Apple basically took FreeBSD, called it ‘Mac OS/X’ and rips off customers by appealing to the cheapest of human tendencies: conformism).

This man for me is …
This man for me is Pope 2.0.
I deeply respect his view of the world, justice, social issues, and I admire his precise use of language.
I don’t have his high ethical standards, nor do I want to afford them for myself, but he (the pope, the buddha) + the Free Software Foundation deserve all the support.

  9. kmav81 Says:

Also on BSD vs GPL, …
Also on BSD vs GPL, I agree that in a good world there wouldn’t be a need for subsubclauses on licenses, but agf only works for about the first 5 minutes in real life. GPL is not god, it doesn’t leave you free will to do sin.

  10. kmav81 Says:

    It is true though …
It is true though that most his speeches and fsf news I’ve seen RMS appears a bit negative. I guess it shows he cares about the issues involved, but it would be fun to see some “join the winners we got statistics” style stuff

  11. kmav81 Says:

    Microsoft license …
Microsoft license fees included in most computers you can buy, you being forced to pay for “authentication” to program for SymbianOS, etc etc == nothing? Industry can survive rather well in its current form but it should not be allowed to. With wolrld becoming computerized and programming skills more common, free software is the natural direction.

  12. hanedagamer Says:

    The BSD license …
The BSD license does not protect the user’s freedom; it protects the developer’s freedom.

It allows any party, whether proprietary or open-source inclined, to take part in the development of said software. There are minor strings attached, but you can do whatever you wish with BSD code. You are severely restricted if you ever find yourself using GPL code.

  13. hanedagamer Says:

    I am completely …
I am completely against RMS’s aims. I agree in part with his ideas, but they are based on pretenses that are quite frankly questionable.

I think Open-Source is a good thing, but I will *never* under any circumstances use nor endorse the GPL where I have a choice. I will tolerate the LGPL, however.

My favourite Open-Source license is of course, the BSD license.

But remember: the only way to ensure that every being has freedom, the software must be public domain.

  14. hanedagamer Says:

    If all software was …
If all software was in keeping with the GPL, or a compatible license, one could not release a piece of software without using the same license, unless one would be willing to write all of the toolkits, libraries, even the OS, from scratch, because the GPL is a viral license, being how simply using GPL software in your project would force you to release under the GPL.

GPL means anything BUT freedom. It gives users software without restriction, at the complete cost of the developer’s freedom.

  15. hanedagamer Says:

    Open-src is good …
Open-src is good for the world, but proprietary software needs to exist too.

Note that I am using Richard’s definition of “proprietary”. The one where a peice of software is not open-source, even though the source code is available to the public, just because the software’s license is not compatible with what he would consider an “ethical” license.

I am a very methodical person, and a scientific thinker. I think in terms of though, not gospel truth, which is why I’m not a member of the FSF.

  16. hanedagamer Says:

    Then another threat …
Then another threat comes. Then the threat does nothing.
Someone just ignores the so-called threat and continues to do what they wish.

Then the nice programmers write more software. Then I continue to write my own software, too.

Then I continue to license my software however I wish, because almost everything RMS does is preposterous. His ideals are fair, his notions flawed. He is a man who suggests that the computer industry can survive in it’s current form using only open-source software.

  17. hanedagamer Says:

    there is always one …
there is always one, two, maybe three, four, five, six or more, threats to “free software”.

But the world is a big place, and after so many years, the open-source movement is going strong. In fact, it keeps getting bigger. Every day, there is more incentive to jump the bandwagon and switch to “freedom”.

  18. hanedagamer Says:

    You know,

    there is …
    You know,

there is always a so-called “threat” to “software freedom” that gets the FSF cult followers in a fit. There is the piece of proprietary software that threatens to break into their house, kill all the children, men, rape the women, then kill the women.

There is always the peice of proprietary software that asks us “papers please” and attempts to shoot us when we try to bypass it.

There’re always the greedy politicians allowing the patenting of software in the US (it IS a problem tho)

  19. kmav81 Says:

    You know, in …
You know, in software industry, they make a big deal about “layers of abstraction”. On the bottom is Linux, dealing with hardware and giving you system calls. Then comes GNU with its libc and gcc and g* and more than I know to list, ie all the things that make a traditional (not) UNIX system tick. Topmost is your typical software that makes end user smile. GNU/Linux is only more informative, you could as well have GNU/Hurd or cant-think-of-any/Linux

  20. hanedagamer Says:

    GNU/BSD/KDE/OSS4- …
    GNU/BSD/KDE/OSS4-or-ALSA/GLIBC/INIT/GRUB/LILO/REDTUBE/ZSH/Linux

Here’s an idea… for every new package, let’s make the name of the OS longer.

    Ridiculous

  22. kmav81 Says:

    yeah richard …
yeah richard stallman is the walrus and we all are his loyal penguins

  23. kmav81 Says:

    the point is it’s …
the point is it’s ethically wrong but most don’t care as it’s not that wrong

  24. hanedagamer Says:

    You’re just being …
You’re just being silly. Marketing a piece of “proprietary” software is NOT akin to being a government that kills it’s own citizens.

Bleh, perhaps I should just stay away from youtube anyway. Full of fanboys.

  25. hanedagamer Says:

    Heh, yeah. So, what …
Heh, yeah. So, what are you implying? GCC uses the LGPL, not the GPL.

Btw, it’s also not part of the OS.
