The guys doesn’t sing that good, the drummer never had a lesson and the somehow they create amazing music. Creativity is always better than those do it by the book bands that follow the same formula. Rock on Stripes!

Have you ever heard blues before in your life? Just wondering. Because the white stripes are clearly without a doubt modern electric blues.
How many “good blues bands” do you REALLY know that are keeping it together without the stripes? Johnny Lang? Because theres like 14 people that know who he is, and he’s one of the most popular blues artists alive right now.
Why’s it so hard for people to give the stripes the credit deserved??

@kjerht Yeah, …
@kjerht Yeah, sorry, but this isn’t the blues. There are plenty of good blues bands out there keeping it together just fine without the White Stripes.

I agree- I love to play along to songs also. I found that covering a song makes you appreciate the song more too. There have been songs I’ve never paid attention to as much, and THEN when I started playing them I started loving it more.

well how about you …
well how about you look outside the “you have to make your hand move as fast as possible” box, the “you have to have had 10 years of singing lessons to impress me” box, and the “Chester Bettingfield is the greatest lyricist in the world box” and maybe you’ll understand there fame. They’re single handedly holding an entire genre of music together. Blues.
Blues is MEANT to be dirty, gritty, and simple. All its for is to express. And he does it better than any blues musician alive.

Seriously, its the …
Seriously, its the simplicity that makes it great. I know it may not seem like much, but I love being able to play along to my favorite band’s songs. The White Stripes show everyone that it doesn’t take impossible solos to make it big, even though Jack White plays some amazing solos. But you should really look at some of Jack White’s solos before you call him an amateur musician.

I hear what your …
I hear what your saying. Here is my thought on a band’s live vs studio efforts. Its like a painting. Live music is fine to see HOW an artist creates art. If you want to see their best efforts it should be on an album where they supposedly took time to craft perfection. That’s what a studio experience is for a musician–their canvas. What they put out is intended. At concerts one sacrifices quality for personality. If W.S. live is better than their studio attempts I will avoid that concert.

I like your reply …
I like your reply the best. I will give you that the White Stripes as a band has a unique sound, and I like the philosphy of trying sometthing different with the minimalistic approach they take (2 people, 3 sounds). I agree fully with you that polished is good but does lack soul that original Rock had (thinking the Animals, Doors, even the Beatles). I agree they would have been better in the 70s. But listening to W.S. leave me lacking. I want a bass, cleaner guitar, and MUCH better drums.

Don’t comment on …
Don’t comment on someone’s guitar playing until you’ve seen them live. By recorded versions Brian May, John Frusciante and, Jimmy Page don’t really THAT special. However, I’m sure most people would still consider them greats. Also you don’t have to be a shredder to be good at guitar. The Edge doesn’t do flurries of notes, but trust me, as a guitarist myself I know he knows his guitar well.

It’s not about the …
It’s not about the technicality that I like about them. But they do however bring that spirit of what rock and roll is supposed to be, they do have that something that most bands don’t, you feel it, atleast I do anyway. They would have been great in greenwich village in the 70’s. I like a well polished band sometimes, but sometimes they forget what rock n roll was all about.

November 7th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Sorry, its not …
Sorry, its not great, certainly not worthy of fame. The lyrics are nothing any motivated high schooler couldn’t come up with or do better. The instrumentation is dry and flat. The musical skill is fine for an amateur church band but if we are after professional musicians there are much better available. The vocal skill is poor even for a scratchy rock band that supposedly doesn’t care (I assure you they do care). D-
