    Both Chet and Miles …
Both Chet and Miles had their flaws, like all of us–but Miles has said that Baker “copied a lot of [mess] from me.” No Miles, no Chet–IMHO of course!

A nice post but Clifford Brown was pretty darn straight laced and Chet Baker was a liar, cheat and drug addict. Don’t get me wrong I’d still love to hear that duet….

The old guys are dying but there are defintely a lot of new players up and coming. chris potter’s on his way to becoming a legend.
the music business is fading though so the minority genres like jazz aren’t showing their great artists, like back in the 50s for example

    Don’t get me wrong, …
Don’t get me wrong, I love Baker and hope a critical consensus will develop that, as a trumpet player, he was much more than Miles Davis for white people. I think he was a wonderful vocalist, sort of a male Blossom Dearie. But let’s get real about the great male jazz vocalists: There was that fellow named Armstrong, who essentially invented jazz singing; Nat Cole, Johnny Hartman, Biily Eckstine, Al Hibbler, Andy Bey, Joe Williams, Leon Thomas, Kurt Elling. Take a YouTube evening!

    You can’t really …
You can’t really compare Jazz and Rap as they are very different musical styles. Something like this is very subtle in it’s nature, it’s a song written by a trained musician and played by trained musicians who were/are masters on their instruments. Rap is more about violence, braggadocio etc., and while it can be very good it’s not attempting to do what something like this is doing. Certain rappers like Nas, Tupac, Rakim etc. are very skilled but probably a closer comparison would be bebop

Man i love Paul Desmond, he is truly an inspiration to me, i play alto sax as well and every time i play one of the songs he records i try to manipulate the same soft, and gentle sound you would hear from Desmond. Then i think, i will make Desmond proud to be my inspiration for playing sax the way i do, and at all
