A good plant to have in your house is an Amaryllis. I have a couple around my house and they grow fine in the cold weather. They don't require too much sunlight, either. You can get them anywhere, I think I got mine at Target.
References :
We live in Washington, U.S.

Our Ficus tree does very well even with the dark winter months. Believe it or not, our Date Palm is also doing fine (I feep it right near a picture window so that, when there is sun, it gets it).

They keep our spirits up during the long winters.
