What’s the difference between a tropical fish and a coldwater fish?

January 5, 2011 - 3:41 am 9 Comments

My dad said tropical fish are saltwater and colwater fish are freshwater, but I disagree, I say tropical fish are fish that like plants and coldwater fish are fish that like clear spaces to swim….?
Addition Question: Are Tetras (Neon Tetras) Tropical or Coldwater fish?

It depends on whos talking. For example I consider tropical fish fresh water that need heaters and marine fish saltwater. Coldwater I think of as a freshwater tank without a heater or has a chiller. But you can also have saltwater tropical fish and a saltwater coldwater tank (I think, I don’t know a whole about marine tanks)

Neon tetras are a tropical freshwater fish. They need heaters.

How is it possible for a tropical cyclone to strengthen over land?

January 3, 2011 - 8:52 am 3 Comments

I’ve just noticed that some storms strengthened while over land. Like hurricane danny of 1997. It was a tropical depression over the continental US and then attained tropical storm status. And also are there any other examples?

According to the National Hurricane Center’s report on Hurricane Danny in 1997,

"Satellite images showed that Danny, although very weak at the surface, still had a well-defined cyclonic cloud signature as it moved eastward over northern Georgia and South Carolina on 22-23 July. The low pressure system moved east-northeastward over North Carolina on the morning of the 24th. Around midday, as the center neared the Atlantic seaboard near the North Carolina/Virginia border, the cyclone began strengthening — while accelerating in forward speed. The fact that Danny was re-intensifying while still partially over land suggests that it may have been deriving energy from a baroclinic source. A front was situated just to the north of the cyclone around this time. Winds around Danny were already back to tropical storm force as the center moved back over water around 1900 UTC on the 24th."

So they thought that Danny pick up energy from a baroclinic source. A baroclinic zone is an area where the isobars (lines of equal pressure) on a pressure charts will be crossing the isotherms (lines of equal temperature). In a barocliniic zone, you will usually find a strong temperature gradient which also mean strong winds. Usually when you see this type of pattern associated with an upper level shortwave or a surface low system or front, then you can expect the shortwave or front to be increasing in strength. A system that moves into an area that has a strong thermal gradient is moving into an area that will support shear that will help it to spin up (strong positive vorticity advection). So that was what the expert in the National Hurricane Center think happen. From how this was written, it sounded like they were not positive as to what happen, but that was their best guess.

I don’t know of any other case of this happening, but I am not an expert of historical hurricane events.

The complete report oh Hurricane Danny can be found at this link.

What type of foods do tropical fish eat?

January 1, 2011 - 8:01 am 5 Comments

I am getting a tropical tank which will contain the following fish: Danios, Guppies, Rainbow Fish, Platies, Tetras, Rasboras and Sword Tails. Are these good fish to start with? Anyway, what type of food should I get them? I know I should get tropical flakes, but what else can they eat? Please tell me if you have any concerns on my fish choices, please tell me! Thanks!
Can you also answer some of my other aquarium questions?

You need to give them a variety of foods. Most of the fish you mentioned are omnivores and need both meat and veggies. Tropical flakes do have a mixture, but the fish will appreciate if you give them pure algae flakes, or even a piece of algae sheet thrown into the water.

You can also get freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms, krill and brine shrimp. Feed these less often and for the krill and brine, you need to crumble them with your fingers. Shrimp can constipate livebearers so use the meats less often than the veggies.

Bottom line, if you vary the food, the vitamins and minerals missing in one will be made up with another.

Check the fish area every time you go into petco or petsmart. They often have them on sale and sometimes you can get the food dirt cheap on clearance. It keeps if you don’t break the seal.

How do I plant an orange tropical hibiscus tree?

June 19, 2010 - 9:41 pm 3 Comments

I live in Tennessee, zone 6b, and I recently bought an orange tropical hibiscus tree. Is it safe to plant in this zone. If so, how and when should I plant it, when will it die, and when will it come back?

I’m not sure if it’s warm enough at 6b. Certainly is during the summer but if you have frosts they are very sensitive. Research it at a nursery, it maybe you will have to bring it into a sunny spot indoors during the winter so a large pot would be advisable. I have done that successfully for many years and they bloom all winter.
