I will have lots of tall fake grass, a few rocks and such. What tropical fish go together good? This is a pure display tank for show in my house. I want some swimming at the top, bottom and throughout the entire tank. They also have to live well with eachother and make a beautifully scene. Thanks to all legitimate answers!

For the bottom, a shoal of Corydoras Catfish would add a lot of life. You should get at least 4 of them, preferably 6 or more. Peppered Corydoras Catfish are a nice hardy breed. Albino Cories or Bronze Cories are also pretty hardy.

A very colorful option are livebearers. These will breed though, so if you don’t want babies they aren’t the best option. These are exceedingly colorful with lots of different color strains to choose from.
Platies are a peaceful livebearer with females that are as colorful as males are. They are probably the sweetest natured of the livebearers, with males tolerating each other much better than with Guppies, Swordtails, and Mollies. You should get 2 females per male to start with, and they prefer groups of 5 or more. Platies will swim throughout the tank and provide a huge amount of color to an aquarium.

If your water is more acidic to neutral Tetras, Rasboras, and Danios will do well rather than livebearers.
Harlequin Rasboras are tight schooling fish with orange bodies and a navy blue triangle. They require groups of 6 or more. They swim in the middle of the aquarium.
Neon Tetras are a very attractive loosely schooling fish that are blue, red, and silvery. They are more fragile than the other fish and are best added to a tank that has been up for 6 months or so. They like groups of 6-8 or more. Cardinal Tetras are similar to Neon Tetras and would also work in that tank.

I would like a list please. Any place that is English speaking, uses english currency, and is safe from crime and disease is a good place. I want to be able to find a job in marine biology and maybe start a business. So any tropical place that can support that is also good. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an island it could be on the mainland too.

Hi Cameron,

with your requirements like English speaking you really limit yourself, why’s that? Be open minded to learn another language. However, if you must live in an English speaking country with tropical climate, here’s a short list:

1. Belize
2. Parts of Australia (more subtropical than tropical climate though)
3. Guyana

Regarding English currency, there’s no country that will meet your requirement. Why is it important to you that the country uses English currency? Beats me!

Wherever you go, have a great time and please don’t be too demanding in your new country.

I want to know your suggestions on a tropical destination because my family is planning on going somewhere this winter and we want a place that is beautiful, good beaches and snorkeling, good nightlife (preferably a place where there will be a few teens around) and somewhere that isn’t too far or overly expensive (so no fiji or hawaii). We have already been to Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican Republic so preferably none of those either. Thanks!

For something reasonably close to the US that "is beautiful, good beaches and snorkeling, good nightlife (preferably a place where there will be a few teens around) and somewhere that isn’t too far or overly expensive", I would choose either Grand Cayman, or Aruba.

Both of these Caribbean islands have beautiful beaches and excellent snorkeling, and everything else you are looking for.

I have spent over 30 years exploring islands of the Caribbean, and those would be my picks for what you want.

So I’m thinking of breeding tropical fish – my friend has and she told me all about it and I have the money for equipment. So my questions are:
What types of tropical fish would you recommend and how many of each?
What equipment do I need?

You should definitely start with some kind of Danio. Not only are they small but they are hardy, easy to feed and of course recommended by almost every fishkeeper as a beginners breeding fish. Others may say platies, guppies or othet livebearers but these can breed out of control.
You will need a filter and a heater and a group of 4+ danios if you want to breed them. They must be in a large group because otherwise they won’t be happy, and that way they have a larger choice and are more likely to breed. You might want a breeding trap as they tend to eat their own eggs, what you can do for this is separate the top and bottom of the tank with netting. Put the breeding pair in the top half and when they’re spawning the eggs should fall through the net to the bottom. Another method is to line the bottom of the tank with marbles. This allows the eggs to fall through the gaps between the marbles and out of harms way from the fish until the fish are separated from the eggs and the eggs are retrieved. Once you start hatching the eggs a good thing to do is get a hatchery thing. This is a small container that can be placed within the tank to separate the eggs or babies and the adult fish, still allowing water to flow through. Place the hatchery in the water and add the eggs. Once they have hatched(after about three nights? Idk) keep the babies in the hatchery and feed them tiny bits of crumbled food and when they are slightly older, newly hatched brine shrimp. Once the babies are strong enough to withstand the current of the filter and are large enough to not fit in their parents mouth you can introduce them to the main tank. Remember not all of them will get to this stage, but there will be many who do. I’m not sure how many babies the danios wil have but I’m sure someone else will tell you that. Good luck and happy fish-keeping!

I live in the UK and wish to become a doctor when I am older (only 14 now) but am interested in going into tropical medicine. How would I go about doing that? I know I’d have to go to medical school first and complete the 2 foundation years but then what? Would I train in a tropical medicine speciality or would I have to do some sort of other degree? And how is the working hours and pay for this speciality? Thank you.

Once you’ve finished all your basic training stuff then you would try and get a post at one of the big teaching hospitals specialising in tropical medicine and work your way up. Experience abroad is also invaluable but you would be expected to have some basic knowledge first. Pay would be much the same as the middle and top doctors in other fields but there wouldn’t be as much scope for private practice. If someone has a tropical disease they aren’t going to worry whether they pay for treatment or not, they’ll just be desperate to get better.

Loved the resorts near Negril Jamaica for the resort cleanliness, lovely lovely people who will bring you your favorite drink on the beach without you having to order on the second day, crystal clear water, lots of recreation free at the resort and the value. Went to Couples and want to go back every year, except for the time we get more daring and go to Hedonism. You’ll be offered ganha by the bus shuttle driver right off the bat. A couple years ago, I woulda picked Playa del Carmen or Cabo San Lucas, but I don’t feel safe anywhere in Mexico now. Hawaii is nice, but expensive. Awesomelly cheap is Buhket, Thailand where you can get massages for $2 and luxury full service massages for under $20.

From what temperature is considered coldwater and from what is considered tropical? Like from 20-25 or something..

What is the acceptable temperature for most coldwater fish and what is the one for tropical?

Do you know any fish which lives in the extremes? Like the goldfish tolerating freezing temp.

Coldwater fish–or what we refer to as coldwater fish in the aquarium trade, like the goldfish and white cloud minnows–are not true coldwater fish and are actually considered Temperate water fish. True coldwater fish, such as northern pike, will become stressed and die at temperatures above 60 degrees F. Many of the fish that live in the northern and far southern oceans are accustomed to functioning in very cold temperatures.

So for a true coldwater fish, 40 degrees F to 60 degrees F is usually typical.

Temperate water fish prefer temperatures in the mid 60s to low 70s, but can tolerate warmer temperatures and go into hibernation in the wintertime. Goldfish survive cold winter temperatures, but do not swim around or eat during this time. Temperate water fish can only survive so long in temperatures outside their natural range.

Tropical fish need water above 72 degrees F, with some exceptions (such as discus) that need their water in the mid 80 degree F range.

I made the common mistake of putting a goldfish in which I now understand (unfortunately too late) is not suitable, so I have decided to get a heater for it and go freshwater tropical. I have not kept fish before and would like to know how I should cycle the water (or do I need to empty it and start again) and then what type of fish and how many would be happy in the 30L Biorb?

okay so thats a tiny bit less than 8 galls
the BEST thing would be a betta, theyd love it
or for a bio orb i wouldnt do more than 6 danios or neon tetras or guppies
or you could alsos do 2 mollies/platties
remember you have about 8 galls which is 8 tropical fish inches
usually petstores have how big the fish will get (maximum size)
but you wanna take the maximum size ( times however many you are getting ) minus 8
when you get to zero you want to stop adding fish
