My husband and me are possibly going to fly to Queensland Australia in 2011. It is our first trip out of US. We would like to know what is necessary for us to have in order to be accepted into Australia and get through customs there. Realizing, of course, we will first need our passports! But we’ve heard that the Aussie’s are very careful about what they allow to come into their country…for which we are happy! We appreciate any input from those who have traveled to Australia. Thank you.
Apart from your passports, you’ll also need a visa before you board the plane.
If you want to stay for under 3 months, the only visa you need is an ETA which you can get online from the official government site for a service charge of $20. No work is allowed on an ETA.

If you want to stay for between 3 and 12 months, you’ll need a subclass 676 Tourist visa which you can also get online. Cost is $105. No work is allowed on a Tourist visa.

Australia’s quarantine regulations are very strict and you should not bring any food, plant material or animal products and that includes things like a piece of fruit you got on the plane, a chocolate bar or your favourite straw hat. If you do bring anything, it MUST be declared on your Incoming Passenger card so that it can be inspected and passed, treated or destroyed as appropriate. Most fully processed items will be passed as OK, but declare them and let our quarantine people decide. Take care to declare everything – the sniffer dogs will pick them up if you don’t.

Apart from quarantine considerations, all firearms and weapons of any kind must be declared, but don’t bother bringing any – you won’t need them here. You need to declare all drugs and medicines including prescription medications, alternative, herbal and traditional medicines, vitamin and mineral preparation formulas. Some products require a permit or quarantine clearance and/or a letter or prescription from your doctor describing your medication and medical condition.

There is no limit to the amount of currency you can bring into Australia. However, you must declare amounts of A$10,000 or more in Australian currency or foreign equivalent.
Reading the above makes it sound as if we’re really hard to get along with, but it’s just that other countries have pests and other problems that we don’t have here and we’d like to keep it that way. You’re very welcome here and will have a great time.
EDIT:
You will not be allowed to board a plane heading to Australia if you don’t already have a visa. They are not issued automatically.
