How can I go from indoor climbing to outdoor climbing?

March 19, 2010 - 12:41 am 3 Comments

Hi, I am wondering how each is different. Obviously, outdoor is outdoor and indoor is indoor, outdoor is real rock as opposed to indoor being man-made. But how is the actual climbing different? Also, how do you start climbing outdoors? I currently climb indoors and am looking to climb outdoors but I am unsure of how to make the transition.

Outdoor climbing could be one of two things: sport climbing or trad climbing. Sport climbing is what you may see people do in the gym, where they use quickdraws to clip into bolted routes. Trad climbing is another step up from that because the lead climber places their own protection, thus it’s not necessary to find a pre-bolted route.

The actual techniques aren’t all that different, except you will see more variety of holds, cracks, chimneys, etc. on real rock. If you want to make the transition, there are two ideal ways to do it. The first is to hook up with some experienced outdoor climbers at the gym and go with them to learn everything. The other way is to take a couple classes from a certified rock climbing instructor/guide.

Keep in mind that if you go with other climbers, you probably won’t need to buy any gear beyond the harness, shoes, locking biner, and belay device that you most likely already have from climbing at the gym. If you decide to go on your own, however, you will need to invest a significant amount of money into some new gear.

What is a good indoor antenna to use with a digital converter box?

March 16, 2010 - 10:38 pm 1 Comment

I live in a downstairs apt. & I have a RCA Digital TV converter. Which indoor antenna would someone recommend? Preferably an inexpensive one.

The sad news is, you have almost everything going against you:

1. Indoor antenna.
2. Apartment (can’t install large, outside antenna)
3. Downstairs
4. Low budget

Assuming you’re in the U.S., all of your local over-the-air (OTA) stations are transmitting digital signals, and digital TV reception works very poorly with weak signals. Unfortunately, for someone in your circumstances, weak signals are a given.

I have only one recommendation for an indoor antenna, one that has been extensively tested by some genuine experts on this subject. I’ve included a link for it below. it’s not very cheap, but for indoor antennas, it’s as good as you can get and better than just about anything else.

One thing about this antenna: it’s a UHF design, so you can’t expect much from a station transmitting on VHF. But in your very difficult circumstances, it’s going to be really, really tough for you to receive a VHF stations anyway. You may have to be content with what few channels you can get.

You actually may be better off subscribing to basic analog cable, if your apartment has a cable jack on the wall. For that you won’t need your converter, and the cost should be somewhere around $15 to $20 a month. That will get you a good signal on all of your local stations, whereas the best indoor antenna in the world most likely can’t do that where you are now. Good luck.

How much will it cost to make an indoor garden and indoor pond?

March 6, 2010 - 11:13 pm 4 Comments

I want to make an indoor pond with a waterfall and some fish, i also want the garden to have bamboo and various bushes and unique trees so i can get the japanese style look. How much will it cost.

Well a huge part of your question is how much the matierals are that you want to use. Some plants can be really reasonable and others can be expensive. What kind of fish you use will also made a difference in your bottom line because like Koi fish are more expensive than Gold fish. And what about the rock you use in the design.

What I would do is make a list of all the materials down to the decorative rock, pond pumps and everything to maintain your pond. Go to a garden center and find out about the plants and how much they will run you and also find out if you have options for instance if you want a tree somewhere in the mix sometimes a smaller, younger tree than you eventually want may cost less than the tree the exact size you want.

I would think you could easily be out 10,000.00 or more but, you really won’t know until you price everything out. And I would price everything out and then double it. Just because unexpected things happen and sometimes things simply end up costing more than you realise or you decide to go for a different plant or fish than you originally priced.

Hope that helps…Good luck and have fun with your renovation.

What are the benefits of indoor plants besides decoration?

March 3, 2010 - 3:20 am 4 Comments

I would like to know if there are any scientifically backed benefits of having indoor plants.

Living plants indoors remove toxins from the air and increase oxygen. The aesthetic benefits are equally important especially in winter months when things outside seem dead and cold.

what is the difference between indoor cat food and regular?

March 1, 2010 - 12:33 am 9 Comments

What is different about the indoor cat food formula and should cats that are indoors or mostly indoors be eating it? Thanks!
i saw a brand natural balance that had an indoor formula..i started feeding my cats innova but it’s so expensive so i wanted to mix innova + natural balance..
thanks RuneAm, lol those companies are good at lowering the cost to make it and making that look like its something good! i thought some special vitamins were added or something.

To give the best answer, I’d have to compare actual brands. But to summarize, very little is different. The indoor formulas may have slightly lower calories but that’s about it.

It’s in no way an official label – it’s really pretty much meaningless.

I have found that the better cat foods don’t use these labels at all, so to answer your question I’d say no – don’t feed anything that claims to target a specific breed or age of cat.

I’m going to compare Iams products (not a brand I would ever recommend).

Indoor formula contains:
Ingredients
Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Dried Beet Pulp (Sugar Removed), Powdered Cellulose, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken, Dried Egg Product, Natural Chicken Flavor, Chicken Fat (Preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Fish Oil (Preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Brewers Dried Yeast, Choline Chloride, Salt, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract

Original (chicken) contains:
Ingredients
Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E, and Citric Acid), Fish Meal (source of fish oil), Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Brewers Dried Yeast, Choline Chloride, Vitamins [Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid], Calcium Carbonate, Minerals [Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate], Salt, Rosemary Extract.

Original has more protein – lowering the protein is NOT a good thing. It claims 433 calories per cup.

Indoor claims 303 calories per cup. It’s lower in protein and fat (not a good thing). They’ve removed the meat! They’ve saved on calories by removing anything remotely healthy.

If a gun were held to my head and I was told to feed Iams, I’d choose the original formula. It’s still horrendously bad food, but at least there’s some healthy stuff in it.

So to sum up – don’t feed indoor formulas. If your cat needs to lose weight or you need to keep an eye on that, there are much better things you can do.

EDIT: NB is a decent brand of food. You’ll do fine with that, I think.
