what is a good beach for a weekend getaway in southern california?

August 10, 2011 - 8:25 pm 2 Comments

My friends and I are planning a weekend at a beach next week and we’ve already been to the more popular ones this summer such as Newport, huntington, and Santa Monica.
Is there a beach with great sand, good nightlife, great shopping, lots of activities to do, etc.. ?
We live in orange county so our range is from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Thanks

= Huntington Beach – great shops and restaurants, a pier, a surf contest every year, and I’m pretty sure there are pits… if not, about a couples miles up to Bolsa Chica beach there are.

What beach is the best in California that is kid friendly?

My friend and I are planning to go to the beach with out families, which includes two 1 year olds and an 2 year old. We are looking for something that would be nice for them and has a variety of places to eat.

Carpinteria State Beach
"World’s Safest Beach"
Restaurants just down the street include The Spot (burgers), Tony’s (Italian), The Palms (cook your own steak), and others. There’s also a Foster’s Freeze and Robitaille’s candy store.

If you want something closer to LA, try Huntington Beach by the pier, or Newport Beach by the Balboa Pier. They have a fun zone there.

Santa Monica is very kid-friendly, as long as you stay out of the polluted water. Check out the latest pollution readings at healthebay.org.

How in the world does a beach patrol vehicle run over someone lying on the beach?

August 2, 2011 - 2:25 pm 4 Comments

Saw again today where a beach patrol vehicle ran over a woman at Daytona Beach.

This is not the first time.

How in the world could someone not see a person laying on a towel on a white sand beach?

I have been to this beach, there is plenty of room for vehicles and people, this is just ridiculous.

Perhaps the beach patrol needs to be back on bicycles?
No matter where she was lying, shouldn’t the patrol be alert enough to avoid hitting a pedestrian or sun bather? Would that be a starting point, can you see a body lying on the beach?

When I first read this I thought it was some tourist driving recklessly. Now I find that it was a temp worker picking up empty bottles. Also 11 people have been killed on Daytona since 1983.
This totally absurd. Hope she makes it. It is time for a management change

What are some good beach vacation spots on the eastern coast?

April 17, 2011 - 5:30 am 1 Comment

We want to plan a little vacation and we’re not sure where to go. We already know about all the main ones (Outerbanks, Virginia Beach, Ocean City, Myrtle Beach, and of course the main beach cities in Florida).. but are there any other really nice beach towns that aren’t perhaps as highly visited? We’re trying to watch our budget as well and if you can offer any accomodation suggestions that would be great!

I would like to suggest either Oak Island, Ocracoke Island or Holden Beach. Technically Ocracoke is part of the Outer Banks but it is really a destination unto itself. Very nice beaches! They are totally unspoiled b/c they are part of the national park system and hence, free from commercial development. Check it out:

What’s the weather like in Myrtle Beach during the first week in April? Is it warm enough to sunbath?

April 16, 2011 - 5:28 am 3 Comments

Is it warm enough to play on the beach in your swimsuits? What is early morning and evening weather like? Would this be a good time to go if you’re wanting to spend most of your time on the beach? Swimming in the ocean isn’t a huge deal but definitely want it to be warm enough to lay out on the beach.

You are going to be looking at weather in the 60′s during the sunny days. 50′s at night and early morning. You should be fine playing on the beach but remember its the wind on the beach that makes it cold.

Here is a site that tells you lots of different things to do and where to stay:

Is there a beach in Caribbean specially Jamaica where you can just relax quietly and alone?

April 14, 2011 - 9:47 am 4 Comments

I heard about Jamaica and it is now a pretty famous tourist spot. I want to go to Jamaica but I want to just kick back and chill in the beach under a palm where there’s basically nobody. Are beaches like this available in Jamaica? Like very little amount of people and better yet nobody but you and your people? If there is NOT a beach, do you know where there is a beach in a caribbean country like this?

Jamaica is wonderful but I think it’s too crowded for what you are looking for. Try searching VRBO for +Caribbean +beach +private. You will find houses on private beaches. Check out the one below. Someone I work with rented a house on Eleuthera with his wife. He didn’t tell me but I believe he and his wife were naked all week on a private beach. They rented a cheap house that came with a car and a boat.

Closest beach to orlando that will be warm enough for swimming in march?

April 12, 2011 - 4:00 am 3 Comments

My boyfriend and I are planning a spring break trip to Florida the second week of March. We are spending 3 nights in Orlando and then would like to spend the rest of the week at the beach. But, I’m not sure what beach to choose. I don’t think the beach would be that fun if you couldn’t swim. So, my question is, what is the closest beach to Orlando where we could comfortably get in the ocean and lay out? The keys aren’t really an option because of the drive time. I’ve heard the gulf would definitely be warmer than the Atlantic, is that true?

The closest beach to Orlando is Cocoa Beach, which is on the Atlantic side. I’ve made the drive there from Orlando in just under an hour. I have gone swimming at Cocoa Beach during March, although the water was pretty cold and took some getting used to; it’s typically beautiful laying-out weather.

It IS true that the waters of the Gulf are a little warmer than the Atlantic. The waves are also usually smaller (unless there is a storm coming in or it’s a very windy day). The closest Gulf Coast beaches are those in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. It’s about a one hour and forty-five minute to two hour drive there from Orlando. Some of the top-rated beaches in the country are in this area, so they would definitely be worth checking out. If you are spending more than a day or two at the beaches then I would probably go with the Gulf Coast beaches.

What is the law regarding beach shelters, setting up in front of you, blocking your view at the beach?

December 21, 2010 - 8:36 pm 2 Comments

Sunday we went to the beach, beautiful day and view. Then along comes a family and sets up their beach shelter in front of us by the water, spoiling our view. Then along comes another a bit further along and does the same. There were many shelters at the beach, but most use their heads and set up back up the beach a bit so as not to spoil peoples views. Is there any law to stop people blocking our view.

No, those laws only stop people from blocking your view permanently, because it would lower your property value. Theres no law to my knowledge that says they can’t set up a shelter for the day on a PUBLIC beach…

What can running on the beach do to help and harm the body?

December 9, 2010 - 10:12 pm 1 Comment

Im a freshman @ park vista high school in lake worth florida and my 40 time is 4.70, and i think the coaches are thinking about moving me up to jv, and i wanna get faster and i’ve always heard that running on the beach helps the lower body. How does running on the beach helpful to the body in general?

Because it isn’t a firm surface, it will work the stability muscles in your feet, ankles, and calves, which will reduce the chances of getting hurt. But if you run on the beach too much when you start out, you have a better likelihood of straining one of those muscles than if you ran anywhere else.
