Is it illegal to blow leaves into the street in Tucson?

February 25, 2010 - 1:37 am 3 Comments

I just got a leaf blower. I think it has a vacuum function as well, but it seems so much easier to just blow the leaves into the street for the street sweeper to pick them up. Is that illegal? I live in Tucson.

It’s not legal and it’s not propper. How often does the streets sweeper come? Consider the street as your living room. Keep it clean.

How did you find your accommodation in Milan?

February 23, 2010 - 1:27 am 4 Comments

If I had to plan to stay in Milan for some months, where should I look into in order to find "value for money" (nothing super fancy) accommodation?

I was asking the same question a couple of months ago. There is a company called www.choove.com which offers flexible accommodation in furnished apartments. They are very friendly people and im sure they’ll help you.

What website offered a free, downloadable album of holiday music a few years back?

February 23, 2010 - 1:27 am 1 Comment

Sometime in the 2005-2006 range, one of the larger music websites offered a free, downloadable holiday album around Christmas-time. It was mainly comprised of rock and punk covers of holiday songs.

I’ve lost the album and can’t remember where I got it from, or (more importantly) the names of the tracks.

Hellogoodbye’s ‘Winter Wonderland’ was part of it, as was a slow, somber cover of ‘White Christmas’, amongst others.

Does anyone remember the website or, more useful yet, the list of tracks?

What software development tools are available to the public for free? For legality reasons, what kinds of licensing to these software development tools have?

Just about anything you can imagine is available to the public, and the licensing varies widely. There is no one answer.

What plants can I find in a tropical rainforest?

February 23, 2010 - 1:27 am 2 Comments

Is a cactus found in the tropical rainforest? Pics and websites are helpful too! Thanks and 10 points to the best answer!

Cacti are desert plants.
Orchids are rain forest plants, along with vines and some amazingly tall trees!

How is myrtle beach for poor unmaterialistic folks?

February 23, 2010 - 1:26 am 3 Comments

I have the option this summer of living in Myrtle Beach, and it sounds pretty fun being in a lively enviornment and being close to cities like DC and boston (I live in the midwest) but from what I’ve heard it kind of seems like a playground for rich folks. Is there much to do for a girl who isn’t into shoes, amusement parks, or spending $7 a beer?

MBSC is far from a playground for the rich – it’s known as The Redneck Riviera and that’s far from "rich folk".

In fact, most people here (who live here) earn between $7-10 an hour and work their tail off in the hospitality and retail industries with no hope of ever being "rich". There are "working class" and "professional class" and not much in the middle.

To do? Mostly people come here to go to the beach. It doesn’t cost anything to go to the beach and lounge around all day. There are plenty of things to do that don’t cost major bucks – I usually pay less than a few $ for a beer and more than a few girls I’ve met here pay nothing for a beer (they use my money). ☺

Being close to DC and Boston? There’s not an interstate here. Washington DC is a 7 hour drive and Boston is 14 hours. Atlanta is 5.5 hours and Charlotte is about 4.

Close by is Wilmington NC and Charleston SC – Columbia SC isn’t too bad. Washington and Boston are cheaper to fly to from here.

All of that said, I like it here a lot. I’m not leaving any time soon. Best cost of living of any of the many places I’ve been and there’s plenty to do that costs nothing.

How to make convincing gold without chemicals, tungsten, heat, fire, etc.?

February 23, 2010 - 1:26 am 2 Comments

I want to make convincing gold nuggets (and/or bars), without using chemicals, tungsten, fire, or spending a fortune. I do not plan to do anything like selling it, but I just want to make it, for fun. And, it would be helpful if it was close to the weight of an actual nugget or bar. Thank you for your help.

If it just needs to look like gold, mold modeling clay into a block, stamp it with the letters "24K" and spray paint it gold. It won’t be nearly heavy enough, and won’t fool anyone who picks it up, but it will look good.

Lead bricks painted gold are closer, and may fool some people, but anybody with a scale and a tape measure can calculate the density, and gold is much denser than lead, 19.3g/cm^3, vs 11.34g/cm^3.

The density test is why you read about tungsten, which has a density similar to gold, 19.25g/cm^3.
A gold plated tungsten bar would pass the heft test, but that’s about all. Gold melts at 1,947°F, and Tungsten melts at 6,192°F. Any assayer would carefully drill a hole in the bar and test the shavings.

Why are my miniature orange trees new leaves a different color?

February 23, 2010 - 1:26 am 4 Comments

I have a miniature orange tree and just recently it has put on quite a few new leaves in the upper part of the tree. The leaves are big now, but instead of them being dark and glossy like the rest of the tree’s leaves, they are a lighter shade of green. Have they just not matured yet?

That is normal. The leaves will darken as they age.
