How many miles can I expect to run in an indoor track practice?

January 25, 2010 - 1:41 am 2 Comments

I never did indoor track before. I do not want to look like a loser so i need to get a little prepared for indoor track. I am doing non-competitive. Around how many miles do you think i will end up running at indoor track?

It depends on the day, the coach, and your group.

For instance, if you’re with a sprinting group, you won’t run nearly as much as the distance guys

I’d say to start, it’ll be 2 or 3 a day, and it’ll probably go up from there. Believe me, over the course of an hour and a half or 2 hours, 3 miles is nothing.

How do I get natural looking beach waves with a curling iron?

January 25, 2010 - 1:41 am 5 Comments

I wanna look special Wednesday at school, because it’s the day before break. I wanna look cute and pretty tomorrow and Wednesday, too. And I was kinda looking for those beach waves sorta thing. And I need like, a step-by-step tutorial of how to do them with a curling iron. Please and thank you! :}

—Let your hair dry naturally, then put a little bit of a shine or frizz-free serum on it.

After it is all dry, use a very wide curling iron, take random pieces and curl them.(For an even more beachy look, don’t use the clamp on your iron, just wrap the strands around your iron.) Make sure to curl a lot of the pieces different directions, so it will look natural. After you curl it all, FINGER comb through your hair and shake it out a little bit.

Spray some hairspray on your hand and run it through your hair so you will stay frizz free all day.

Good Luck! Hope I helped!!

Why are leaves bright green during the summer?

January 25, 2010 - 1:41 am 2 Comments

During summer, leaves are generally bright green. What would you hypothesize that his indicates about the role of green light wavelength, chlorophyll, and the photosynthetic process?

Chlorophyll reflects the green light wavelength. So, why do you only see green, but not the other colours given off by the xanthrophylls, etc?

Don’t believe the first answer about the sun being closer in the summer (it isn’t true).

LEAVES’ EYES – My Destiny (Official)

January 23, 2010 - 5:11 pm 25 Comments

With their latest masterpiece “Njord”, Leaves’ Eyes embarks on yet another enthralling journey through the myths and sagas of the North. The strong and sonorous compositions familiar to the band’s fanbase have been further developed. The adventure begins with the title track’s powerful and somber choruses and orchestra. Fans will find the continuation of the Leave’s Eyes hit “Elegy” in the rocking single “My Destiny”, which is only one of the
many catchy and soon-to-be hits delivered by Liv and her colleagues. Devilishly enticing are the refrains found on “Take the Devil in Me”, “Northbound”, and “Through Our Veins”, the last of which reminisces in the driving beats of the eighties’ rock rhythms. Leaves’ Eyes’ passion for both heavy and opulent sounds harmonizes perfectly with memorable melodies, as in the epic track “Ragnarok”, while “Emerald Island” surprises with heavy double bass passages that are counterattacked by Liv Kristine’s haunting vocals. Alongside the lavish hits, Leaves’ Eyes always finds room for the more subdued folk moments, such as in the interpretation of the English traditional song “Scarborough Fair” or the fragile acoustic ballad “Irish Rain”. The opus “Froyas Theme” rounds off the Nordic journey, uniting the choral arrangements of the magnificent Lingua Mortis Orchestra with the emotional strength inherent in the new Leaves’ Eyes compositions. “Njord” impressively defends the sextet’s claim as the leading force in symphonic Gothic Rock and Metal.

What is the recommended accommodation for first timer to stay in Hunter Valley, NSW?

January 22, 2010 - 7:56 pm 2 Comments

I’m going with a friend and we intend to rent a car and drive there and stay for a night or two at Hunter Valley in Aug. Am looking for the best accommodation in town that offers the best value-low in price, good location and clean & comfortable. Any suggestions on what to do there other than visiting wineries since Aug is still winter month? How much can one expect to spend for this visit?

Hello Dee,

The Hunter Valley wine region is centred around Pokolbin and includes many smaller communities such as Lovedale, Wollombi and Rothbury.

There are a broad range of accommodation options in the area including guesthouses, hotels, self-contained, bed and breakfasts, resorts and motels. For the most part, prices are comparable with Sydney but be mindful that many providers will have a minimum two-night stay on weekends as this is when they are at their busiest. When there are large events in the area minimum stays may be even longer depending on the venue.

Having worked in the Hunter Valley for a number of years, I can advise that the best prices are often available by calling after lunch on the day you would like to stay but this can also be a little risky as they may book out.

To be in the centre of Wine Country, you should consider staying in Pokolbin but for lower price options you may consider moving out a little. As a general rule of thumb, the further you move away from Pokolbin the cheaper the prices will be.

In the heart of Pokolbin, try Harrigan’s Irish Pub as everything is at your doorstep and the entertainment will be brought to you. If you’re interested in something a little more secluded it’s worth looking at Billabong Moon. Finally while I haven’t been to the Neath Hotel and it’s about 15 minutes drive from Pokolbin, I’ve heard many great reports of its accommodation and food.

Apart from eating great food and drinking top quality wines there are also many activities available in the area including hot air balloon flights, art galleries, golf courses, horse riding, bike hire, brewery tours and much more. The major city of Newcastle is about one-hour’s drive away and Port Stephens beaches and dolphin watching is about the same travel time.

The budget for the trip really depends on where you stay, what you eat and what you do. It is an area where you can spend as little or as much as you want depending on your intinery.

I hope this information proves useful in planning your trip.

Volunteer positions during the holiday season?

January 22, 2010 - 7:56 pm 1 Comment

Where & how should I look for a volunteer position during the holiday season? I’m in Southern California.

At this late a date, it’s going to be *very* difficult for you to find a volunteering opportunity on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, because organizations are overwhelmed with requests from people who want to help on those specific days, and there isn’t enough opportunity to go around. Still, no reason not to try — just know that it might take many, many inquiries before you find something. Next year, start making inquiries much more in advance. And know that many organizations reserve opportunities on holidays for their long-term volunteers.

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, many of them in your area. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).
