I heard from a friend of mine there is a type of bunny or guinea pig (looks like a bunny rabbit) you are allowed to keep in Queensland. And I am well aware that having rabbits in Queensland is illegal !
It sucks soooo bad that we are not allowed rabbits(or ferrets) in Qld. I share your pain lol. But as far as a breed of guinea pig that looks like a rabbit…Do you mean with long ears? There is no such breed. You can have any breed(when I say breed I am meaning coat type, there isn’t really a ”breed” of guinea pig, like dogs or cats lol) of guinea pig you wish, there is no illegal guinea pig.
There is a breed of g/pig that looks like a cuddly teddy bear, and that is the rex. They have tight fuzzed fur, curly whiskers, they can weigh more than most breeds of guinea pigs at adult age, have big droopy ears(not half as big as rabbits, but they are bigger ears than other types of guinea pigs) and have a brick like face that adds to their cuteness. These features are the purebred standard. As for any other types, I personally have never come across a guinea pig where I have gone ”hey, that looks like a bunny!”.
As far as I am aware there is no breed of rabbit that we are allowed here. I know for a fact we still have wild hares around the place(they get bigger than your cotton tailed bunnies) as we see them when we are out driving around early in the morning, and we have seen one or two cute cotton tailed bunnies hopping around, but I also know that if you get busted with any of these as domesticated pets, they will take the animal off of you and euthanise it straight away, no questions asked. You may even get a big fine.
I do know you could get away with having one on the border(like Tweed Heads if you live down the Gold Coast) but I wouldn’t risk it anywhere else. I also got an email from one of the ferret forums I was a part of saying that if you had a ferret in your place and the authorities come knocking to not answer the door, put the ferret into the car and high-tail it for the border. The minute you are over it, no one can do anything about it. If you do get caught however…Lights out for your beloved pet :- (
Best of luck, I am curious to see anyone else’s answer, too, as certain as I am that there is no such thing, I am curious to see what someone else has to say! Stupid Qld rules, I was born in Gosford, NSW, but my parents moved up here when I was a bub(dang ‘em!). I can sort of understand the bio security nonsense, but if NSW can…Why can’t we?!?!
