Bondi Beach Gets Flipped! Towel Surfing – Flip Video Flash Mob

October 31, 2009 - 11:41 am 25 Comments

Bondi Beach, home to some of the worlds greatest surfers, became home to a new surfing phenomenon today when Towel Surfing was born!

Over 200 people joined in synchronous dance on their towels to the music of Australian music icon Ben Lee in a perfectly choreographed routine that amazed onlookers.

It started with one, lone individual, who walked through the crowd of sunbathers and surfers and placed his boombox on the sand in the middle of the crowded beach and pressed play. What followed was a contagion of rhythm and dance as one by one other beachgoers joined in began surfing on their towels.
They kicked their feet, paddled with their hands and bobbed up and down checking for waves all while remaining on their towels, dry on the pristine sand of Bondi Beach.

There was once an ogre named Thunk. He didn’t get along with the other ogres, and so he decided to explore the world. All was going well until he met the very first thing he came across. If not for his great fatness, he would surely have minor bruises. But what else lurks in the cold? In the dark. In the…um…otherwise uncomfortable.

Are corn plants deadly to cats?

October 30, 2009 - 5:17 am 3 Comments

I purchased some indoor trees today and one happened to be a corn plant (dracaena massangeana). I bought this one on impulse without knowing anything about it.

When I got home I realized I should check the toxicity of this plant for my cat, especially considering he began nibbling on the Kentia Palm I bought about 4 minutes after I brought it indoors.

I’ve found conflicting results on the net. Some sites say it will cause vomiting and other gastrointestinal issues for cats and dogs, while some sites say it’s not toxic at all.

I really like the way this tree looks, but I certainly wouldn’t choose it over my cat. Does anyone know for sure either through first hand experience or because of profession?

I typed in dracaena massangeana toxicity and found this

http://www.plantcare.com/encyclopedia/corn-plant-428.aspx

It says yes it can be toxic to pets. Remember that the plant nurseries may also spray pesticides on their plants against bug infestations, which can be toxic to pets as well if they try to eat the leaves or flowers.

How do I go about offering accommodation in our Mississauga, Ontario, Canada home to foreign students?

October 30, 2009 - 5:16 am 1 Comment

I’d like to open up our spacious four-bedroom home to one or two foreign students who need accommodation while they study in Toronto or the GTA.

I had a foreign exchange student in my home for part of the last school year. I did this by contacting a major agency. I contacted AFS www.afs.org

Below is the contact info. They have been doing this a long time and they will give you a bunch of kids to chose from if you want.

Good luck!

How does Holiday Trash Collection work?

October 30, 2009 - 5:16 am 3 Comments

A mystery I’ve never been able to figure out is how trash collection works on holidays. Where I am, on holiday weeks, trash collection gets delayed a day. But this of course solves nothing. There is still the same amount of trash to collect, and the same employees (of someone, not necessarily the town) to pick it up, but one less day to do it.

I can only see a few possibilities:

1) They give them the holiday off but force them to do overtime on the other four days. Not really a holiday. They do get more money though.
2) They hire temporary workers to take up the slack. But would they do this for one week? And what about equipment — there is no more equipment than there was before, and that would seem to be key.
3) Somehow they are 25% more efficient on holiday weeks. Unlikely! If they could be that efficient they’d want them to be so the whole year (but then you’re back to the holiday problem).
3b) Some businesses agree to forgo holiday week collection.

In my town they work on Saturday and get paid overtime for it. This allows them to give them off for the holiday but still get the trash picked up.

What software can I use with a barcode scanner for our event’s registration procedures?

October 30, 2009 - 5:16 am 1 Comment

My org will hold its annual convention this coming March. We want to take advantage of the bar codes found in students’ IDs for faster registration procedures. We’re planning to borrow barcode scanners from our school’s IT dept, but they might be unwilling to let us use their software for security purposes, and also licensing purposes. What software can my org use that would be easy to use, complex enough for registration, but not too complex that we won’t be able to understand how it works. Thanks!

What type of tropical fish can live well in a tank together?

October 30, 2009 - 5:16 am 13 Comments

I have a tropical aquarium and have some guppies, tetra’s a few loaches and one male siamese fighter. They all seem to get on fine together but I would like to introduce some more fish and am not sure what species will fit in with mine. I have quite a large tank and all my fish are quite small. Anyone have any ideas?
I have a 400 galloon tank and at the moment, I have 3 tetra’s 2 sucking loaches (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri), 1 barb, 1 male guppy, 3 female guppies which is 10 fish in total. I also have 2 trumpet snails to help clean up. There are a some small live plants as well and there is still a lot of space in the tank.

i have a 400 gallon tank and in mine i have 2 clown loaches,2 bottom feeders 4 angel fish, contrary to what people think they don’t fight,4 balloon mollies 4 pink kissing gouramis they are a lovely colour,1 plec,
4 dwarf gourami they like being in pairs,
i have a purple coloured Siamese fighting fish,i have to watch his tail as some times it gets nipped.
i have 4 platys and a baby Mollie that found its way into the bag when i bought the others.
Ive had my tank a bit and all these fish get on well with one another.
if you have the height in your tank angels are great they are so pretty.
the clown loach are full size and its like they dance around in the tank when they swim, and love to hide behind the rocks i have in my tank.
the gouramis are slow moving but they are a great blue colour, they can be hard to keep, they get stressed very easily and are prone to mouth rot and fin rot and white spot, but as long as they are not in with aggressive fish and really fast moving fish they will be fine

What is the maximum horsepower engine I can legally use if I am under 16 in Queensland, Australia?

October 30, 2009 - 5:16 am 1 Comment

I am 14 years old. I am thinking about buying a tinny or inflatable boat. I know I have to be 16 to get a boat license but I was told I can drive XX horsepower without a licence. What is the maximum horsepower engine I can legally use if I am under 16, without a boat licence, in Queensland, Australia?

http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Home/Licensing/Recreational/

It would seem 6 hp is the cut off point, but I am unclear as to the situation there – the link above is to the Queensland Govt. Website and you may have to ring them up to find out in person.

Good Luck.
